2 Cor 5:17 Says that anyone who is in Christ, is a new = kainos- kai-nahs brand new/ fresh
creation ktisis= ktee-sees= creation, creature
a new creature/ creation; a new being;

the old [creature] (your spirit which was dead in sin) passed away, behold, the new [creature] (a new supernatural being) has ginomai= ghee-no-mai= come into being.

Not a remodeled or renewed being but a new being.

Not a renewed caterpillar but a butterfly

In John Ch 3: v3 & v5 Jesus said that a person must be born from above by the Spirit to enter the kingdom of God which is the realm of heaven.

Jesus says in v6 that it is our human spirit that is born from heaven by the Holy Spirit.

And in v7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.’ We must be born from the spirit realm to be a new spirit being; a new creation.

Eph 2:1 You were dead in your trespasses and Sins … 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because
of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions created a living being in union with Christ. su-zohah-poi-eho means created a living being in union with su= union with; zohah= living being poi-eho= to make or create

We were created as a new being. Not a remodeled or renewed old one but a new being.

Our spirit dead in sin. Our spirit as a new creation.

We were dead in our sins, so we needed a savior; Titus 3:5 God saved us, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy, by the washing of paliggenesia paulin-ghen-esia palin= new, genisis= ghenisis = creation
We were washed clean by becoming a new creation not by our works.

Titus 3:5 says by the washing [being made clean] of a new creation Kai “kai” can be translated “and” or “which is” and I am translating it “which is.”
Therefore v 5 says God saved us by the washing [being made clean] of a new creation kai = which is ana-kaino ana-above kaino-new = new from above by the Holy Spirit.
We become a new creation– created new from heaven by the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 1:3 says that God “according to his abundant mercy has anagennao- ana= above – gennao: create created us from above
through the resurrection ana-stasis ana= above stasis= cause to stand or raised
of Jesus Christ from the dead”
God has created us above (from heaven) through Jesus being raised from above (from heaven).

We were raised with Christ as a new creation.

1 Peter 1:23 says, “You have been ana-gennao created/above not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God….
We become a new creation by the supernatural seed of God’s word and Phil 3:20 become citizens of heaven= you are a citizen from the place you were born.

So, when we receive Christ we become a new creation in our spirit. However, our mind still needs to be made new.

Eph 4:22 In regard to your former way of life, you have put away or down apotithemi= apah-teeth-ay-me aorist tense the old person anthropos which corrupted itself through deceitful desires. Putting down the old person happens when we are crucified with Christ and born from above.
(23) being ana-neos ana=above neos= new = made new from above in the spirit of your mind, As we live out of our new nature in our spirit our mind is made new from above. Not renewed old thoughts but new spiritual thoughts.
(24) that is because you enduo dou = sink  en = in/within = sink within the new (kainos) person (new creation) who is created in the righteousness and holiness of the truth. This is the righteousness and holiness of Jesus who is the truth. We sink into the new person (our spirit) who is righteous and holy and our mind (schema) is made new.

Rom 12:2a Don’t continue in union with the schema formed in our minds by the world.

We are in the world, but no longer of the world, we are heavenly citizens.

So, we don’t have to continue in union with the schemas of the world but we can
2b experience a metamorphosis= a change of schema.

Not a renewed caterpillar but a butterfly.
Not a renewed old schema but a new schema.

The same thing that happened to our spirit can happen to the schemata in our minds.

How? Rom 12:2c By the ana-kaino of your mind.
ana = above- kaino = brand new-

The metamorphosis process is the testing of our faith until a new schema made from heaven emerges.

Rom 12:2b That we may dokimadzo= prove, purify, discern what the will/desire of God is for us.
Dokimadzo means to prove or purify: Like to purify gold.

Old schema                                            Testing of our faith                           New schema

1 Peter 4:12 Don’t be surprised by the fiery trial that comes upon you for the testing of your faith as though some strange thing is happening to you. 13 But Rejoice…

When we receive Jesus we become a new creation in our spirit.

Our spirit: dead in sin. Our spirit: a new creation.

And as we meditate on God’s word and stay devoted to Jesus in the trials of life, where we experience the testing of our faith, new schemata get created in our minds.

James 1:2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 But endurance must have (pres. imp) its complete result so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.

Old Schema                      —Testing of our faith—                               New Schema

God doesn’t send trials to change us. The trials of life reveal the schemata in our minds, and God desires to change our schemata to enable us to have a kingdom response to the trials of life.

God would you download these schemata in our brains, so we don’t think it is strange when we experience trials.

Rom 12:2a Don’t continue in union with the schema formed in our minds by the world. But experience a metamorphosis= a change of schema by a new schema from God by meditating on God’s word.  For example, “Perfect love displaces all fear.”  We are using the metamorphosis of a caterpillar to illustrate how this works.

Fear                                                      Metamorphosis                                              Love

We experience this metamorphosis so that:

Rom 12:2b  we may dokimadzo= prove, purify, discern what the will/desire of God is for us.  Dokimadzo means to prove or purify: Like to purify gold.

Gold ore contains other metals such as zinc, copper, silver, iron. The gold ore must go through a process to remove the other metals (i.e. fears) then the “ore” no longer exists but a new creation called gold (agape love). We are using gold as a symbol of agape love which displaces all fear.

 Gold ore= the old schema/fear.

 Gold= the new schema/agape love.

As we meditate on God’s word/ thoughts the old schema (ore) no longer exists and a new schema (gold) is created which enables us to perceive:

Rom 12:2c the will of God which is good, well pleasing and perfect – for you.

As our schemata changes we find our thoughts coming into alignment with God’s thoughts and then our will comes into alignment with God’s will and produces God’s will in our life, so that we live the way God created us to live.

We see this in 1 Peter also:  1Pet 1:3  Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born from above to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead… v6  In  this [salvation] you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, it is necessary= deion- deh-on = necessary because of the nature of things for you to be distressed by various trials, 7  so that the dokimion means to prove or purify: Like to purify gold of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor…

We see the same truth in James 1:2  Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3  knowing that the testing of your faith. Testing dokimion = purify, prove produces endurance.

The testing of faith/pistis produces endurance: the Greek word for faith is pistis which means to stay dependent on Christ like an infant with its mother. As we stay dependent on Christ like an infant with its mother we will endure the trial and our faith/ relationship will be strengthened.

4 But endurance must have (have is a present imperative, which means that  endurance is imperative in order to have) its complete result, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.  The result of staying dependent on Christ through the testing (the gold ore being purified)

is that we will become mature, complete, and not found lacking in that area. And that area will become like gold.

Ex “The Lord is my shepherd I will not lack” is the gold in the ore.

Expect the other minerals to be separated from the gold. Don’t think it strange when those things emerge in this process.

1 Peter 4:12 Don’t be surprised by the fiery trial that comes upon you for the testing of your faith, as though some strange thing is happening to you. 13 But rejoice…

Ex. Iron= fear of lack. It gets separated and bubbles to the surface.

Don’t focus on the metal/fear that comes to the surface.

Focus on Christ and the gold/ provision that will emerge.

Consider it joy when the trials of life come and challenge the truth: “The Lord is my shepherd I will not lack.”  And continue to fix our eyes on Jesus because the testing of our faith produces endurance and the result of endurance is lacking in nothing.

Fix our eyes on Jesus in the crucible and continue to confess, “You are my Shepherd I will not lack” until the gold manifests in this realm.

Fear of lack of provision

Trials of life and testing of faith /endurance

Provision

Don’t be surprised by the fiery ordeal that comes upon you that tests your faith. Embrace Jesus in the crucible and our schema will become like gold in that area. Remember it is a process, so don’t be discouraged, keep looking back took Jesus the author and finisher of your faith, because he is in the fiery furnace with you.

What we have discussed in the first 3 parts is:

Rom 12:2a Don’t continue in union with the schema formed in our minds by the world. But experience a metamorphosis= a change of schema by a new schema from God.

Old Schema                                                              Metamorphosis                                    New Schema

Rom 12:2b That we may dokimadzo= prove, purify, discern what the will/desire of God is for us. Dokimadzo means to prove or purify: Like to purify gold.

This process uses a clay crucible, filter, and burning furnace.

Gold ore                                    Refining   process                                           Gold

Gold ore contains other metals such as zinc, copper, silver, iron. The gold ore must go through a process to remove the other metals (i.e. fears) then the “ore” no longer exists but a new creation called gold (agape love).

Gold ore= the old schema/fear.                                                      Gold= the new schema/agape love.

As we meditate on God’s word/ thoughts the old schema (ore) no longer exists and a new schema (gold) is created which enables us to perceive:

Rom 12:2c the will/desire of God which is good, well pleasing and perfect – for you.

Don’t be surprised at the fiery ordeal that comes upon you for the testing of your faith.

Embrace the crucible and come out like gold.  Remember it is a process, so don’t be discouraged, keep looking back took Jesus the author and finisher of your faith, because he is in the fiery furnace with you.  God will create a schema of love in place of the schema of fear and God’s will/desires for us will be clearer because we will be thinking God’s thoughts.

The caterpillar schema/ fear  is gone                                      and the chrysalis emerges

through devotion to Jesus and meditation on the Word  (i.e Perfect love displaces all fear 1John 4:18)

A metamorphosis occurs.

How?

Rom 12:2  By the ana-kaino of your mind. ana = above-  kaino = making new-

The metamorphosis occurs by making a new schema from above (from heaven) in our minds.

We meditate on God’s thoughts from heaven and then:

The old schema, fear, is gone.

And the new schema, love, (1Jn 4:18 perfect agape love displaces all fear) is created in its place.

Not a renewed old schema but a completely new schema. We don’t experience a renewed caterpillar (schema) but our schema becomes a new form (butterfly).

So, Rom 12:2a Don’t continue in union with the schema formed in our minds by the world. But experience a metamorphosis= a change of schema by a new schema from God.

Old schema/ fear                                     metamorphosis                        new schema/ love

So Paul is saying in Romans 12:2 Don’t continue in union with the schema formed in your mind by the world. And he continues But be transformed Metamorphosis = Meta=change   morph= form. Metamorphosis = change form: Like changing from caterpillar to a butterfly.

We engage metamorphosis by meditating on the Word of God .The caterpillar becomes a J symbolizing the simplicity of devotion to Jesus and Jesus being formed in us.

In this stage our life gets turned upside down,

We enter into the process that becomes a chrysalis

A chrysalis (from Greek χρυσαλλίς = chrysallís). The term is derived from the metallic gold-coloration found in the chrysalis of many butterflies.

The chrysalis stage can be a very difficult time. We can feel insecure or depressed because in that part of our mind we are no longer a caterpillar and we have not become a butterfly yet.  But if we will embrace this stage, as difficult as it may be, through devotion to Jesus and meditation on the Word then the glory of God will rest upon us and Jesus will enable us to pass through this stage as we look forward to the butterfly emerging on the other side.

For example, every time you are confronted with fear, declare and meditate on “perfect love (God’s love) displaces all fear.” 1 John 4:18 Do this until the schema changes.

Be transformed from a caterpillar to a butterfly in your thinking.

In the bible in Romans 12:2 it says in the Greek language that it was written in:

Don’t suschematizo Su-skay-mah-tee-dzo Su= union with; schema= scheme, form.

The verb tense is present imperative which means continual or repeated action.

So it reads “Don’t continue in union with the schema…” A schema is the organization of words and experience in the mind into forms that provide a view of “reality” a worldview.

Don’t continue in union with the schema formed in your mind by the world.

Each section is a schema such as fear, anxiety, or depression.

The metaphor I am using for this schema  is  caterpillar

But be transformed: The Greek word is Metamorphosis = Meta=change   morph= form/schema

The metaphor I am using for the new schema is a  butterfly.

Metamorphosis = change form/schema: Like changing from

A caterpillar= old schema                      To a new schema = butterfly

Example: A schema of fear can be changed by meditating on God’s word, “perfect love displaces all fear” (1John 4:18).  Every time you are confronted with fear, declare and meditate on “perfect love (God’s love) displaces all fear.” Do this until the schema changes.
